Once you’ve completed Observed Color and Grayscale to Color, it’s time to learn to paint directly. Direct painting is deceptively simple: pick a color, then put it on the canvas. It’s hard work, and takes time to master. In my experience, the best way to internalize direct color is with still-life painting. I’ve created this series to serve as a ‘still life boot camp’. Over the videos I demonstrate the process of making a rough color study, and prepare you to make many of your own. To facilitate your work, I’ve included photos of dozens of simple still lifes - so you can get right to the painting process. Direct color takes time to master, so get ready for lots of homework!
